10 Songs from Korea to Comfort and Empower You After a Breakup

You know if you’ve been there. Sitting on your bed, staring at the wall, wondering why things didn’t work out, why they decided to cut you out of their life.

Sometimes it helps to listen to music. Music gives you something to connect to and lets you feel those emotions, and music also can help you realize that it’s going to be okay. You’ll get along fine without them.

I've done a post about Korean confession songs before, but now it's time for the opposite. For this post I’ve put together a list of songs from Korean artists that need to be added to any “breakup” playlist.

It’s proven that listening to sad music helps heal a broken heart, so here are some songs for when you need something depressing:

One of the first stages of grief: Denial. It takes a while to process what happened, that you and your significant other really did just break up. This chill song featuring melodic voices and rapping captures that emotion of bewilderment and shock.

No matter how hard you try, sometimes it’s impossible to hate the person that broke up with you. You really, honestly, truly loved them, yet they didn’t reciprocate. The Korean band DAY6 has so many perfect songs for after a breakup, it was hard to choose just one. For those who prefer genuine instruments, this song is for you.

I love “PIZZA” by OOHYO because it sounds cute, but it also sounds depressingly happy as if she’s forcing herself to have a good attitude. The lyrics are sad and relatable. Sometimes you get lost in your head imagining all the things you used to do together, and how much life sucks now in comparison.

This is a heartbreaking song about not wanting the breakup to be real, but realizing it’s for the best. You’re not good enough for them anyway, right? (Not true, by the way!) WOODZ has an insanely beautiful voice and the song has such an aesthetic flow and sound. Should I mention this is one of my all-time favorite songs so you feel obligated to love it as much as I do?

I think it’s universal that the color blue symbolizes sadness, yeah? In this song, BIGBANG sings their blues about a breakup. (Probably saw that one coming, didn’t you?) The lyrics and melody help you feel sorrow, longing, loneliness and pain for a love that didn’t work out.

While sad music gives you comfort during a breakup, empowering music can help you start moving on. Here are some songs to give you a pep talk, cheer you up, and remind you that you’re in charge of your own feelings:

Even if you didn’t advocate for the breakup, this song can help you realize that you shouldn’t be with them anyway if they hurt you. Be happy and celebrate your chance to start over with this upbeat tribute to an ex from Korean American Eric Nam.

One of the best ways to get over a breakup is to distract yourself. Surrounding yourself with friends and people who truly care about you can help get your mind off of things. Amber’s song reminds you it’s important to make sure you have others around you, but beware watching the music video; it gets kind of interesting what Amber does as revenge.

Listen to CL if you ever need some powerful female vocals. This song is to tell your ex to stop contacting you and that you don’t want anything to do with them. They might regret breaking up with you down the road, but you’ll realize you’re better off without them.

Yes, this song is explicit, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t full of emotion. In fact, it’s probably the most emotional one on this list. Suggi himself has said listening to this song is hard for him, even though it’s another one that helps you realize you’re okay without that person that meant so much to you. When you get to the point that you can curse out your ex, you know you’re good.

The sass is real in this song! “SEE U LATER” by BLACKPINK is great for girls if a guy did them wrong; even if you secretly still want him in your life, it’s better to get rid of that negativity and not let him control your feelings. Just say see ya!

Whether you’ve been dumped before or you’ve yet to experience a breakup, keep these songs on hand for when you need either sad love songs or getting-over-it words or encouragement. Listen to them all in one place with this Spotify playlist. If you find yourself in a breakup situation, remember that you will get through it and feel better.
