When I lived in South Korea last year, I could for sure tell that spring was around the corner because....cherry blossoms! Cherry blossoms exist in the States, but definitely not in the abundance that they do in Asia. Streets are lined with these beautiful pink trees that sadly only last for a couple weeks.
The aesthetics of cherry blossoms make the beginning of spring very exciting, especially in Korea. Because of that, there are a ton of songs are spring. Here are some of my favorites:
"Bom Bom Bom" is an iconic song for springtime, with feel-good vocals and pretty backdrops. Bom itself is the Korean word for spring....you'll definitely hear it many times throughout all of these songs. In Roy Kim's song, it doubles both as the word for spring as well as a sing-songy onomatopoeia, similar to "la la la".
Cherry blossoms are majorly featured in this music video. There isn't much else to it other than pretty shots of the group members walking around in the pink atmosphere, but the song has a relaxing melody that is perfect for the feelings of the newly warm season.
Another happy, chill melody, and a band playing their instruments surrounded by cherry blossoms. What's better than that? I listened to this song SO much during my spring in Korea, so it brings back a lot of my own memories every time I listen to it. Also, what is it about spring that makes everyone want to whistle?
BTS uses spring as a metaphor for being happy with people you care about. The lyrics are about wanting to reunite with your friends that you miss, which will put an end to the lonely, cold winter and make things warm again. You can feel the emotion in the song, even without knowing the translation.
10cm is known for doing a lot of K-drama soundtracks, and rightfully so. Listening to their music makes you feel like you're part of a love story and you're on your way to meet your special someone. This song has an isolated acoustic guitar with vocals, making it simple yet beautiful.
Every year there are a plethora of songs and music videos coming out of South Korea featuring spring. It's an exciting time of year when it's finally getting warm and the colors are coming back to the earth. Which of these are you going to play to welcome spring?
